To AI or not to AI
Over the last two years or so, I have played around with the various AI tools, using Chat GPT for a few searches and generating images in the early versions of Bing. It was with the aim of pure experimentation and fun. Back then, I could not really see a concrete use for AI in my day to day work.
Having worked in tech for almost 25 years, I don’t tend to get distracted by the next and best shiny thing or release. I generally wait until wider market adoption or someone I trust or know, can help me. Day-to-day I already use so many types of software, tools and app’s. I don’t pop another one into my bookmark links in my browser lightly, it needs to earn it’s place.
However, in recent months, I have gotten more focused and intentional with my experimentation. I share some examples below of what that experimentation has resulted in and why I am starting to see - for me - the very valid use of AI tools in almost every one of work days.
1. Image generation for various uses
Sharing this first, as it is fun!
To generate the image above, I played around with various prompts to get the image I wanted for this article. I used Open Art on my browser on my mac desktop, the free version.
Image prompt used: “A middle aged women is searching a map in the wilderness in a planet in outer space trying to to find the way back onto a hiking trail”
Exploring with a few more prompts, has helped me to get different types and styles of image for use in my content.
2. Better job information retrieval & research
On a project for one of my mentees, who is searching for a very (very!) specific range of PHD job and study opportunities, the free version of Perplexity.ai has also come in useful to share and how them, us both exploring it’s uses and limits.

It is all down to refining the prompt as the starting place:
