Context: Kicking off 2023 in-person event season in style! - This week, lucky me, I got on the road to facilitate in person workshops in Calahorra, La Rioja. Under 2 hours from Zaragoza, I was happy to be able to hop on the train and journey through the countryside and watch the beautiful scenery and vineyards whizz by out the window. The invitation was from Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, Calahorra, a language school there that teaches English to mainly local Spanish students and the topics were:
Digital Nomads and Remote Workers
Living a more Sustainable Life
Student reactions included:
π "Oh I never thought about remote work in that way"
π "Default to trust" - this is something I will take away from today
π "I did not understand that Remote Work is more than only working from home"
π "I will know what to say and how to welcome a a Digital Nomad to my town"
I love to teach and getting quality time with students, seeing their facial reactions, answering their queries and watching them assimilate is a privilege for me.
Also, I got to visit some local farms before the workshops and see one of my favourite mushrooms growing in special βBodegaβ tunnels, check out my smiley face!
The trip to La Rioja, is the first of many in person events in 2023, maybe our paths will cross in person? Furthermore, although my costs were covered with a little extra for the day of travel and delivery, but this is an example of how I like to βgive backβ.
Why and how I give back: Approx. 20-30% of my work is unpaid, low paid or charitable. To explain, as I consider myself an advocate for Remote Work Access - with the profile of a Part-time Digital Nomad with a family - I offer, decide and choose regularly to do low cost or free work, as a donation. Essentially, giving back to the communities I endeavour to serve. Use this form to reach out with a request.
Then what happened on the journey back, is amazingβ¦.
Evidence that we should listen to that βsuddenly inspiredβ call - When I boarded the train back to Zaragoza, at 9pm on that Monday evening, I was suddenly inspired, and wrote the following post - almost directly - into Linkedin:
Remote work is not a perk.
Remote work is not a fad.
Remote work is not a nice to have.
Remote work is not a fringe benefit.
Remote work is not a passing trend.
Remote work is not working from home only in a crisis.
Remote work is not an optional extra.
Remote work is not an add on.
Remote work is not something you grant and then withdraw (eg. during and after a global pandemic)
Remote work is a totally new operational model.
Remote work is orchestrating the biggest shift of organisational power seen in many generations.
Stop underestimating it's impact and start respecting this new way of working that is changing lives and our world.

Then I hit publish and started answering a few messages and emails. Got home around 11pm and was relieved to get into bed and get some well deserved shut-eye after a long, but fruitful day. The following morning, the post had started to trend and I now, two days later it has gone viral - well I think that is the term, with currently over 150,000 impressions, 75 reposts, 140 comments and many many messages.
On reflection, this post, is the cumulation of 6 years of observation, research, lived experience about, in and around the topics of Remote Work, WFA and Global Mobility. It has been brewing and processing for many months.
It is the thinking labour of years. Puked out - literally - in a flash of creative inspiration on a train, what serendipity!
But more importantly - to me anyways - this one post, resonates and amplifies a message I have dedicated my career, purpose and (some parts) of my life too, with willingness and gratitude.
So this week, I am extra thankful and encouraged,
Until the next #DigitalNomadStory,
take care, love n light - π Ro
