It’s early morning here in Cáceres, España, just before 7 am. The light of sunrise has not arrived yet into the beautiful town square - or Plaza Mayor - outside my balcony window. Luckily, I created this Substack note below yesterday, to capture the beautiful view and ambiance.
For an overview on how to use Substack notes, see here.
Some Context: To quote wikipedia:
“The Old Town (Parte Antigua) still has its ancient walls; this part of town is also well known for its multitude of storks' nests. The walls contain a medieval town setting with no outward signs of modernity, which is why many television shows and films have been shot there”
Yep, this town is like stepping back in time, magnificent. And, score
Cáceres is en route to Lisbon, from my base in Zaragoza. So, on a road-trip with the “Empress of Remote Work”, Valentina, we decided to stop here, eat a very nice local meal and explore for the night. We also decided, intentionally, to break our trip as for the next almost 3 days, we will be in full work-event-mode, at Running Remote (the main remote work industry conference), where I am facilitating a workshop, which has been planned since the start of the year.
“Staying productive when you remote work and travel” is my workshop topic. Apt really, given that yesterday, I totally soaked myself in the ambiance of the town square, fully - for 2 hours.
Sitting on some cool stone steps; watching, listening, admiring the architecture, noticing the various “locals” passing by, taking their “paseo” or evening walk, immersing myself in the town atmosphere fully. The sounds, smells, people and their activity in a vibrant Spanish town square are one of many reasons I love Spain.
“Later, as we watched the light change to a beautiful dusk from our balcony window, swallows danced an evening dance across the vast square, sweeping patterns and weaving over our heads. It felt like an enchanting aerial show, just for us”
These two paragraphs above are why I travel.
What I cherish about travel.

Work, yes, work is why I am on the way to Lisbon, and the event, was the main motivator for the trip. BUT the afternoon yesterday, as Cáceres welcomed me into it’s ancient walls and as the town square enticed and then cast it’s ancient spell, I succumbed to the magic and just let myself be enraptured by the place.
So - how can we can ensure we protect ourselves within our travel lifestyle? How can we as remote workers that travel or those who are nomadic, always remember to embrace the places we find ourselves in? The answer is simple - but due to the distraction that all technology presents - often the most difficult to act on. For me yesterday, I simply succumbed to the magic that I encountered. Making memories I know I will always resonate and remain.
Work, well, work can wait.

Just this morning, I walked up to Anos Syros, an old town up on a hill, behind the main town of Ermopouli, on the island of Syros, Greece. Even though it's Monday morning, the magic of this island called to me. And I'm glad I said yes! I find that when we succumb to the magic of where we go, we find a new creative zest that trickles into our work, too!
