The topic is on Relocation to Spain and how to be prepared, especially from a b2b perspective, that is employers who want to support employees and wider business operations.
Global mobility and business operations is a vast area of expertise, in bigger companies they even could have a global mobility department. Which is a team of dedicated experts on relocation, company policies, geographies, legal compliance, international payroll etc. etc. This department supports global mobility of employees, the whole away across the employee lifecycle, from hiring to off-boarding. In larger departments you can also have team members who specialise in particular global regions and territories.
Individual countries have nuance in terms of employment law, legislation and local compliance. For example, the terms and text needed in a contract for an Irish employee, would be very different from a Greek one or a Austrian contracts. Local labour laws - which can change - plus any wider regional considerations are also relevant.
Some employers may use Employers of Record (EoR) to assist in relocating employees to Spain or creating new local businesses for trading. EoR offer local business entities to employ people in Spain and worldwide. This allows people to work for businesses located anywhere, even to move country whenever they want to, and for businesses to hire whoever they want, wherever they want to live.
Consequently, businesses can be more open to flexibility and blended global teams, to remote and hybrid working. While some people fret about the ‘gigification’ of the economy, it offers unprecedented levels of freedom and flexibility to workers at every level. 🥘 Spain welcomes Digital Nomads
Before I go into greater detail on how we established ourselves as a family in Spain, ticking all the administration boxes, registering for taxes and establishing our businesses - we have to talk about the Spanish Digital Nomad visa.
Launched in 2023, official Spanish Government details are here on how to apply for the visa. Subsequently, the visa has risen up the ranks to be one of the most popular - albeit complicated - visa to obtain.
For a further breakdown of the criteria, see below:
There is no doubt that the visa is popular, but as I mentioned below it is not one of the easier (eh, nothing is easy in Spain when if comes to administration, believe me!) however, people are attracted to the climate, culture and diverse landscape of Spain.

👣 Sequence of steps in Spain
When we first arrived in Spain, in theory, we had it easier than most in terms of relocation. We were Irish nationals, all with Irish and therefore EU passports.
However, we still had various administrative checkpoints, steps and stages to pass before we would either get a Spanish government number (vital!) to then access health care and next permission to work and earn in Spain, via establishing a company or becoming a Spanish sole trader.
The steps to establish business in Spain were (based on Irish passports)*:
NIE - Spanish Government Registration Number
Spanish Bank Account
Social Security Number
Padrón Municipal - local regional registration
Health Card
Tarjeta Ciudadana - local city registration card
Clave PIN - pin number for online identity and government activity registration
Electronic Certificate for business registration
Note: the above does not constitute professional or particular advice, simply the steps we followed, which were determined and dependant on the sequence.
*this process may differ dependant on your passport.
Finally, myself and my husband both registered as Sole Traders or Autonomo’s (Independent Traders) in Spain, a category that is unfortunately not so well cared for or supported in a business economy that is very reliant on it’s public sector.
On and ongoing basis I use an online accountant service to submit my accounts and manage my taxes, via Entre Traimtes, who are very reliable Spanish Accounting and Business Advice providers.
I don’t have any regrets about our move to Spain, the opposite in fact, it is probably the best place I have ever lived (I previously have lived in Ireland, UK, France, Germany and New Zealand - so lots of international experience), but the bureaucracy is challenging to say the least. There is a definite trade off with the higher quality of life and living. For me, it makes total sense and my heart is happy in Spain.
