Meet Maris Kohv, the CEO of MINOMA (previously known as Borderless Retreat). MINOMA is a lifestyle movement where inner work and collective power meet to bridge the gap between mindfulness, entrepreneurship, and co-creation. The idea for MINOMA arose as a result of seeing the potential to combine mindful living and travel lifestyles and build community.
Digital Nomad Stories 💚 is a free newsletter, but if you like it, you can donate to support my writing work here and I would really 💚 appreciate it!
The story behind MINOMA started with Maris’ journey towards more freedom in 2018 when after feeling stuck in life for a couple of years, she decided to make some radical changes. Maris dived deep into personal development and got very curious about her internal experience, including a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation course. Furthermore, Maris moved from Estonia to Lisbon, Portugal, to break out of the familiarity and worked remotely as an architect there. Sharing with the digital nomad community from Portugal opened her eyes to new experiences and encouraged her to live a happier and more fulfilled life.
Now, you can find Maris in Morocco organizing the next MINOMA’s retreat taking place on March 19-26, 2023. More details here!

🫶How do you take care of yourself when nomading?
The 10-day Vipassana silent meditation course made a reset on my mindset, and connected me back to my body and my intuition. Therefore, my daily meditation practice has increased the quality of my life beyond measure. On most days (aside from travel days), I take my mornings very slowly and dedicate around an hour to meditation, yoga, setting intentions, being in the sun, and quite often dancing as well.
I also consider my environment and the people I surround myself with as part of self-care.
I've been incredibly fortunate to meet so many people through the retreats we organize who are committed to slowing down and prioritizing their well-being on a daily basis.
For instance, our team and community constantly remind each other to do things out of love, not fear. Using this as a compass to design our lives while being present is how I see self-care at its core.
✴️ How do you find community as a nomad?
A community, for me, means deeply aligned connections and shared values. For this reason, the retreat experiences are a great example of community because we have spent such quality time together and really see eye-to-eye. By being open and expressive, I easily connect with amazing people.
I still sometimes attend events that resonate with my passions - like ecstatic dance events, sharing circles, moon ceremonies, and intentional meetups to meet new people.
Additionally, I usually check different location-based Slack channels to find people who are in the same place and sharing similar interests.
In October 2023, MINOMA will organize a 100+ alumni / new members Festival in Agafay, Morocco. It will be an energetically charged celebration of life with various workshops from our alumni and experts in wellbeing, unique mindfulness sessions, DJ sets, and so much more.

🌱 How do you consider the planet and minimise your impact?
Between the MINOMA retreats, I travel to destinations where I know people from the community or where there are nomad conferences and events.
I generally plan on staying in one place for around three months, if not longer.
The slower pace gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in the nomad community in a specific location and organize meetups for conscious entrepreneurs.
>>> Similarly to Kristina’s Digital Nomad Story, Maris considers herself a minimalist as it has impacted her wellbeing and the environment. She explains more below.
I travel with small hand luggage and an additional carry-on bag. Therefore I'm incredibly intentional about the things I buy. If I consider buying new pants, I have to be willing to get rid of an existing pair (either donating or giving them to a friend). So far, I have reduced my consumption of goods by around 80%.
Slow-travel, eating mostly (local) vegan/vegetarian food, and almost always walking to places are also choices based on my values around caring for the planet.
