Edition #113 is coming from Southern France, I’m Ro and my bio is below. I post cool stuff on Linkedin and a regular free Newsletter: “Remote Work Digest”.
👋 Howdy readers, hope you are well!?
Thanks for opening this edition and swinging by! Nice to see you here.
Greetings from the sitting room of our family pet and housesit location in France. Our nomadic family has extended to include: 1 dog, 2 cats, 1 hen and 4 (wild in a pond) frogs and we are having so much fun. From dog walking to frog spotting, to cat grooming and taking care of the hen - who is recovering from red mites, there hasn’t been a dull moment, believe me.

This edition is a round up of my top 5 news picks from recent times.
5️⃣ on Friday
1️⃣ “One rule for me, and different ones for everything else” as Starbucks illustrate that they will bend (and break) their own remote work rules and policy, making an exception regarding remote work for a senior executive hire. I say = Not Fair. Plus what about the environmental impact of his 1,000 mile commute? Please, please, help it all make sense!?
2️⃣ “There’s A Difference Between Travel & Cultural Imperialism”: A Native Catalan Reflects On Barcelona’s Digital Nomad Nightmare - a thoughtful piece, especially - “But simply to say that why and how you move somewhere matters”
3️⃣ “She spent four months in France and Spain on a $6,000 budget” yes, it’s yours truly getting some American coverage from CNBC on my recent efforts to reduce my travel costs.

4️⃣ As a counterbalance to the impact in cites of Nomads and overtourism, what about how Digital Nomads can help support de-populated rural areas? I volunteer as an advisor with Rooral.co, featured in this article: ‘Half our villages are dying’: How digital nomad hubs are reinvigorating rural Europe.

5️⃣ Remote work makes more time for work-life balance - New evidence based research shows that remote workers have reduced their time at work and increased their time in leisure substantially between 2019 to 2023, and these trends continued into 2023. Validation of what many of us already know, remove the commute and curate your own workspace, then the majority of people will adopt more leisure activities.
