👨🏽💻 ✈️ I really, really want to WFA!!
Every week in my mentoring practice I meet wannabe nomads or those with a strong desire to WFA, but they don’t know how.
They are often driven by the chance to travel, explore and work from wherever they choose. Or they have friends nomading or exploring and want to join them.
A reminder that you can be a founding member forever for €45 to ask any questions weekly in my community thread, access the full archive and always have access to comments in any article.
Every story is so, so unique yet there are some common threads which I have learned from over the years.
I have grouped them into three broad categories of people and their associated mindset.
Perfect Paul’s: waiting for the perfect remote job, time and conditions
This group are totally fixated on having everything perfect before they even try to WFA or nomad.
If they have a job they focus on a job that has the same or better conditions than now (not considering the trade off of savings most remote workers make from not having to commute), they they insist on the perfect timing and conditions of that job too.
In short they are seeking perfection and it is often not out there, or extremely hard to reach.
Plus they forget the huge challenge - as demand far outstrips supply - landing a remote job is in the first place.
(read more below)
In short, they won’t compromise much on their job or current earnings, which is often the main point of tension between what they dream of and achieving it.

Immediate Irene’s: want it all and want it yesterday
Impatience and focused on instant gratification, the Irene’s want it all yesterday and cannot see the long game.
That is, that to get to WFA or Nomad Nirvana, you need to know it is a long-term effort and requires that mentality, plus huge doses of commitment and resilience.
These groups can be prone to distraction too, as from the start their mindset is about quick results so when something else grabs their attention they get disturbed and lose their way.
Miscalculating Mary’s: underestimating the true nature of Nomading
Nomading or extended periods of WFA are a lifestyle choice and impact everything from health to family and close relationships to finances. The whole gambit.
It is often a 360 degree impact.
It is only when mentees start to work to formulate their plans do they realise the whole extent and impacts to all of these elements that surround them.
Resulting in:
Unplanned for reactions from loved ones
New considerations in terms of health and wellbeing
Finance reality checkpoints and restrictions
Designed by nomads for nomads, SafetyWing Nomad Insurance is a trailblazer Nomad Insurance offering from a global WFA company (yes, created by Nomads!) with a clear mission and purpose.
Wider considerations about the risks and mental health costs
Underestimate the effort to find a job or start a freelance side-gig business
As planning get’s underway and time passes, they get “cold feet” or “analysis paralysis”
All of the above send the Mary’s into a spin and they hesitate or maybe even stop or give up completely.

Timing, lack of patience and misjudging the gambit of challenges and impacts there are, are three of the most common pitfalls I encounter.
Perhaps your experience is different?
Whatever and whoever, I relish working with people to make an actionable and sustainable plan to start to WFA and become nomadic.
Are you dreaming of the same lifestyle, what are you experiences and biggest barriers.
Why no share in the comments below, so we can all learn?
Every experience is different but worthy of sharing as we can all learn from each other.
